This library of spoken cree is spoken in the 'n' dialect.
The Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre is a non-profit organization established in 1975 under the direction of Grand Council Treaty #9, now known as the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN). The centre is funded by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) through its Cultural Education Centres Program. The Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre is managed by a board of directors who represent each tribal council area of NAN.
The Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre offers three programs under our mandate and mission: Language, Resource Centre, and Education. The Language program encourages the use of Cree, Oji-Cree, and Ojibway. These are the first languages of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN). This program develops culturally relevant materials in the three Aboriginal languages as well as developing glossaries and archives of Elders’ stories. In addition, the language program provides translation and interpretation services upon request to Aboriginal organizations, communities, and people within the NAN area. The Resource Centre offers a unique opportunity for research and reference work. Our specialized collection contains periodicals, books, audio, and DVDs relevant to Aboriginal people of North America. The Ojibway and Cree Cultural is the largest native library in Ontario and second largest in Canada.
The education program provides assistance in the development of culturally appropriate curriculum and resource materials for use in NAN schools. In addition, support is given to teachers in the areas of professional development, advocacy, and matters of educational concern and importance.
